MODELLING THE IMPACT OF PUBLIC AWARENESS AND BEHAVIOUR CHANGES WITH TREATMENT ON HIV/AIDS DYNAMICS IN RESOURCES – POOR SETTING

HIV/AIDS prevalence continues to be on the increase in populations around the globe, especially in resource-poor nations with limited resources and inadequate public health services. A simple nonlinear -type mathematical model that incorporates the use of HIV public awareness as a control in the presence of treatment of HIV infectives is proposed to theoretically assess the contributions of behaviour changes among the aware HIV susceptible population. The awareness programme causes a change in the behaviour of aware HIV susceptible individuals resulting into three susceptible classes. Qualitative analyses of the model including those of the basic properties are presented. The basic reproduction number of the model is determined and stability of equilibria analysed. The disease-free equilibrium point of the model is shown to be both locally and globally asymptotically stable when its corresponding basic reproduction number is less than unity. The Centre Manifold theory is used to show that the endemic equilibrium point is locally asymptotically stable when its corresponding reproduction number is greater than unity. Using a Lyapunov function of the Goh-Volterra type we also proved that the endemic equilibrium point is globally asymptotically stable when its corresponding reproduction number is greater than unity. Finally, a numerical study of the model was carried out to validate the results of our qualitative analyses.
